BATON ROUGE – LSU students and members of City Year New Orleans assisted the LaPlace community on Saturday, Oct. 6, in recovery efforts following Hurricane Isaac, which devestated parts of South Louisiana in late August.
The group of 40 LSU students joined forces with members of City Year to work with Operation Nehemiah and Can-Do.org to complete a number of projects in the area. Twenty-five students helped move debris, which had been previously gutted from homes and from homeowners’ yards to the street so that it could be removed.
Fifteen students assisted City of LaPlace representatives with community assessment surveys by canvassing areas that received significant damage. Volunteers provided the homeowners with relief kits and information about services available to them through the city.
“This project hit home with a lot of our volunteers, allowing them to see the ongoing needs that still exist in the LaPlace community and surrounding areas because of Hurricane Isaac's devastation,” Volunteer LSU Associate Student Director Morgan Matchett shared.
Matchett reminded the group of volunteers that “it is sometimes easy to forget about these needs when at LSU, but this served as a reminder to volunteers to reach out to communities that are in need.”
