BATON ROUGE – LSU’s Hilltop Arboretum is currently accepting registration for its Junior Master Gardener program’s fall camp, which is scheduled for Nov. 21-22 at the arboretum, located at 11855 Highland Road. The deadline to register for the fall camp is Friday, Nov. 11.
The camp, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day, offers children ages 7-10 the opportunity to learn about and experience nature through the arboretum’s newest sustainable gardening program. Activities will focus on the fun, art and science of gardening. On the first day, the children will have fun making wearable works of art, gardening crafts and container gardens. Campers will also make food for a wildlife tree, and have a chance to learn more about themselves, their friends and their community. Louisiana Master Gardeners and Junior League of Baton Rouge volunteers are working together to prepare the activity centers.
Participants will earn Junior Master Gardener medals for completing Chapters 1and 5 of the Junior Master Gardener Handbook. Activities required for certification will be offered in a series of three camps that will be held in the fall, spring and summer at the arboretum.
The Junior Master Gardener program, developed by the University Cooperative Extension Network, is a program that introduces young gardeners to the fun, art and science of gardening. To complete certification, a child must finish gardening activities from eight chapters in the Junior Master Gardener Handbook. The arboretum offers the program in a series of holiday and summer day camps to provide the maximum opportunity for working families to participate. Participants will receive a certificate of completion for each chapter, as well as chapter pins, even if they do not complete full certification.
While nutritious snacks will be provided throughout the day, parents are asked to provide a brown bag lunch and drink for their child.
