What was your previous position and where?

I taught high school biology for a decade, and then college biology for a decade in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

What brought you to LSU?

In 1989, I was invited to become LSU's first sponsored visiting scholar in science education, with duties in biology education research, graduate teaching in science education and service as the associate editor of the top-rated "Journal of Research in Science Teaching."

What is your research interest?

(a) Informal and formal botanical education: theory and practice; and
(b) The visual representation and integration of botanical and geological knowledge.

What do you hope to accomplish at LSU?

To inspire students to excel, to inject new ideas, and to advance research within the field of biology education.

What do you enjoy most about LSU?

The academic freedom, quality of the students and faculty, beauty of the campus and the competition of SEC sports.

What are your major accomplishments?

Presented invited research lectures on five continents;
Awarded the 2007 Charles Edwin Bessey Medal by the Botanical Society of America;
Elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science - Biological Sciences section;
Elected a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London in Biology;
Served as editor of the "Journal of Research in Science Teaching" and the "International Journal of Science Education;" and
Served as major professor for 35 LSU Ph.D.s in science education.
