James Van Scotter

James Van Scotter

Associate Professor
Advisor, Master of Science in Analytics
Department of Information Systems & Decision Sciences
E. J. Ourso College of Business

What was your previous position and where?

I retired from the United States Air Force at the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1998 and took a position at the University of Memphis. I left there in 2003 to come to LSU.

What brought you to LSU?

I was attracted to the Information Systems and Decision Sciences, or ISDS, Department at LSU because, in addition to a Ph.D. in business administration, I had earned a masterís degree in logistics management and another masterís degree in computer and information science. The ISDS department seemed perfect for someone with that background.

What is your research interest?

E-commerce, individual and organizational performance, and related topics.

What do you hope to accomplish at LSU?

I want to help develop our Master of Science in analytics degree into one of the top business analytics programs in the country.

What do you enjoy most about LSU?

The people. As a member of the military, my family and I moved 12 times in 22 years. The people of Baton Rouge and LSU are the friendliest and most welcoming we have come across anywhere.

What are your major accomplishments?

From the personal perspective, I have three grown children, a great wife and lots of great experiences. From a professional perspective, teaching has given me the opportunity to work with some great people, to continue learning and to contribute something. One of the best things about teaching is that you have the opportunity to change lives. I would like to think that I have been a positive influence on at least a few of my students. I hope my greatest accomplishments are yet to come.
