Felicia Song

Felicia Song

Assistant Professor
Manship School of Mass Communication

What was your previous position and where?

I was a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia.

What brought you to LSU?

Trained as a cultural sociologist with interests in media and technology, I was attracted by the invitation to work within a mass communication school and enhance the training of both undergraduate and graduate students with a more theoretical and sociological perspective on new media and public life.

What is your research interest?

My research interests have been oriented around technology, consumer culture and public life. My work has concerned how contemporary conceptions of community, identity and the self are shaped by the Internet and technologically mediated communication. I am beginning a project that explores the cultural phenomenon of "mommy blogging" and its potential to renegotiate existing relationships between women, corporations and the public sphere.

What do you hope to accomplish at LSU?

I hope to broaden the perspectives of my students — not only through their coursework, but also in encouraging them to step beyond their comfort zones and reach for horizons that they may not have previously considered — whether it be pursuing graduate education, living in a different part of the country or becoming an agent of change within their careers or communities.

What do you enjoy most about LSU?

In addition to having supportive colleagues who do interesting work, I’ve enjoyed meeting and teaching the wide range of students who come through LSU.

What are your major accomplishments?

I published my first book, “Virtual Communities: Bowling Alone, Online Together,” with Peter Lang in 2009, and I’ve received two Tiger Athletic Foundation Undergraduate Teaching Awards — one through the Honors College and one through the Manship School.
