LSU Today Flagship Faculty

Guoqiang Li

Guoqiang Li

John W. Rhea Jr. Professorship in Engineering
Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering
LSU College of Engineering

What was your previous position and where?

I had been a faculty member in the Department of Civil Engineering at Hebei University of Technology in China before I joined LSU Department of Mechanical Engineering, first as a postdoctoral research associate and then an assistant professor-research.

What brought you to LSU?

I reviewed several papers written by LSU professors on composite materials when I was preparing my dissertation on a related topic. I was deeply impressed by the high quality of research at LSU. Therefore, when I knew there was an opportunity to be a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at LSU, I applied for and was offered the position.

What is your research interest?

Because of my education and training in civil engineering and working experience in mechanical engineering, my research is interdisciplinary in nature. My general research interest is in polymer composite materials and their applications in lightweight and impact-tolerant engineering structures. Particularly, my current research focuses on experimental testing and physics-based mathematical modeling of bio-mimetic self-healing composite materials using shape memory polymers as well as their applications in self-sensing, self-adapting and self-healing engineering structures.

What do you hope to accomplish at LSU?

I would like LSU to be recognized as a leading institution in polymer composite materials, particularly in smart composite materials. I would like to continue to publish in top-notch journals in my area of study. I would also like to have a positive and longer-lasting impact on the education and professional life of my students, and help them in achieving their career goals.

What do you enjoy most about LSU?

I enjoy the environment to conduct interdisciplinary research and the outstanding research programs in my department. I also enjoy working with my collegial fellow faculty members, my research associates and my students.

What are your major accomplishments?

My accomplishments at LSU include more than 100 refereed journal publications in high visibility journals in my area of study; several million-dollar research grants as principal investigator; and several prestigious awards for my research, mentoring and service such as the 2010 LSU Alumni Association Faculty Excellence Award, the 2009 National Faculty Researcher Role Model Award by Minority Access Inc., and the 2008 Society of Plastic Engineer Composite Division Educator of the Year Award, as well as my involvement in several archival journals as guest editor, associate editor and editorial board member.
