LSU is an equal
LSU Today Flagship Faculty
What was your previous position and where? Before LSU, I was an assistant professor at Texas Tech University.
What brought you to LSU?LSU's reputation, along with the Manship School's innovative media program and emphasis on diversity, played an important role. My wife is an environmental scientist who specializes in wetlands, so the Baton Rouge area was a great move all around for us. I'm also a huge college football fan, and having a nationally recognized football program certainly didn't hurt.
What are your research interests?I research media portrayals of race, with a focus on immigration in the news. I examine news content and interview journalists to look for patterns in how issues of race and ethnicity are framed in the news media, and study how those frames impact the ongoing discussion of race and racism in this country.
What do you hope to accomplish at LSU?I want to see my students excelling in a field that they love, where they're truly excited to go to work each day. I will do whatever I can to make that happen, and I will continue to push myself so that I can be an asset for them. On the research side of things, I would love to raise awareness of systemic racism that still exists in the United States, and contribute to the ongoing, nationwide discussion of race in the hope that we can move toward a culture of understanding and tolerance.
What do you enjoy most about LSU?The people. I just started here at LSU last semester, and after my students turned in their first assignment, I had to adjust my expectations because the students just blew me away. Teaching students who are this engaged makes my job that much more exciting. The Manship faculty and staff here are just fantastic, and the atmosphere is so supportive and encouraging that it makes coming to work a pleasure.
What are your major accomplishments? So far, outside of a couple of teaching awards and a few publications, most of my accomplishments have been me living vicariously through my students' success, which I'm more than happy to do. Personally, I've run a full marathon, I have a near-encyclopedic knowledge of James Bond, I've rescued several cats and dogs, and I married the most awesome wife ever. Not too shabby.
