LSU is an equal
LSU Today Flagship Faculty
What was your previous position and where? Before coming to LSU, I was a graduate student at Rutgers’ Institute of Marine and Coastal Science.
What brought you to LSU?After completing my Ph.D.in 2002, I applied for and was offered a postdoctoral researcher position in the Department of Biological Sciences at LSU.
What is your research interest? My training was in oceanography and genetics, but my current focus is on science education. Through my work at the Science Residential College, I try to help freshman students make the transition from high school to college. Also, several colleagues and I have funding from the National Science Foundation to run a faculty development workshop we developed called STAR - Scientific Teaching, Assessment and Resources.
What do you hope to accomplish at LSU?This was the first year the Science Residential College was open at LSU. I would like to help it continue to grow and improve every year so we can be recognized nationally as a model living-learning community helping freshman science students succeed.
What do you enjoy most about LSU?I love the beautiful campus and the passion that people feel about LSU. Other universities that I have attended or visited do not seem to arouse the same enthusiasm that people feel about LSU. I am very proud to be a part of that tradition.
What are your major accomplishments?I have won three awards for excellence in teaching since I have been at LSU. These have been especially gratifying for me because I was nominated by both my students and the faculty in my department for the different awards.
