Tracy Gieger

Tracy Gieger

Assistant Professor
School of Veterinary Medicine

What was your previous position and where?

I worked in a private, small animal speciality hospital in San Diego for about six months. Prior to that, I was a radiation oncology resident at Cornell University.

What brought you to LSU?

The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine is one of the few veterinary teaching hospitals that is located in a growing metropolitan area. This translates into a higher and more diverse caseload, which fuels clinical research projects and student/house officer learning.

What is your research interest?

I am in a clinical track position, so most of my research is focused on clinical patients and their diseases. My primary research interests include feline injection site sarcomas, canine mast cell disease and radiation treatment planning and delivery.

What do you hope to accomplish at LSU?

I hope that the clinical and benchtop research that we are doing at the SVM will ultimately save the lives of many animals and humans with cancer. One of my main goals here is to educate clients and future veterinarians about cancer in animals. Most people donít realize the similarities between many human and animal cancers in regards to biologic behavior and therapeutic options.

What do you enjoy most about LSU?

I completed my undergraduate and DVM studies at LSU, and it is great to be back. The LSU campus is beautiful and the school spirit is amazing! Here at the School of Veterinary Medicine, I am privileged to work with a fantastic group of colleagues, house officers and veterinary students.

What are your major accomplishments?

I am one of very few triple board-certified veterinary specialists. I completed three residencies and am board certified in the specialties of small animal internal medicine, medical oncology, and radiation oncology.
