LSU is an equal
LSU Today Flagship Faculty
What brought you to LSU?I was attracted to the advertised position “assistant professor of geomicrobiology,” and specifically to what appeared to be LSU’s commitment to interdisciplinary research and teaching efforts. The position was for a tenure track faculty appointment that was 75 percent in the Department of Geology and Geophysics and 25 percent in the Department of Biological Sciences. I have advanced degrees in both geology and biology, and so for me, this position was not only a way to take advantage of my interdisciplinary background but would also serve as a catalyst for initiating an interdisciplinary-research program in geomicrobiology at LSU.
What do you hope to accomplish at LSU?In addition to establishing and building my geomicrobiology program at LSU, which I have affectionately termed the “GEMS” group, or Geomicrobiology and Environmental Microbiology Studies, I hope to build upon the various microbial science programs and initiatives at LSU and in the state of Louisiana. I hope that our interdisciplinary research, teaching and recruiting efforts will bring international focus to LSU. Another one of my goals is to expand on the educational opportunities of our undergraduate students. For geology students, this involves incorporating more field experience and hands-on learning options into my courses.
What do you enjoy most about LSU?I enjoy the diverse research opportunities at LSU, from programmatic and department resources, to facilities like CAMD, to university- and state-wide funding programs to enhance research competitiveness. I have come to realize that I have had a richer academic experience than I would have had at other universities. I think that the opportunities afforded to me at LSU, as an interdisciplinary scientist and professor, are unmatched by our regional counterparts.
