LSU is an equal
LSU Today Flagship Faculty
What was your previous position and where? Before I joined LSU, I worked for three years as project engineer for Michael Baker Jr. Inc., four years as senior engineer for Florida Department of Transportation and one year as assistant professor at Kansas State University.
What brought you to LSU?When I complained about the remote location of Kansas State and did not know much about LSU and Baton Rouge, one of my colleagues who was a LSU graduate, citing the good food in Baton Rouge, convinced me to send an application to LSU. During and after the interview at LSU, the department chair and associate chair for research convinced me of the research opportunities in Louisiana, citing the many bridges in Louisiana.
What is your research interest? While my research is concentrated mainly on bridges, my research areas are broad, including bridge dynamics/aerodynamics, new materials applications, bridge testing and performance evaluations, and wind engineering.
What do you hope to accomplish at LSU?Develop a strong research program in bridge/infrastructure engineering, help improve the departmentís national ranking, and also contribute in teaching and professional and community service.
What do you enjoy most about LSU?Weather, food and football are definitely top on my list. I also enjoy the research opportunities at LSU by working on bridges, coastal and hurricane related issues, and my relationship with my students and my colleagues.
What are your major accomplishments?I consider myself very lucky in many aspects. During my eight-year tenure at LSU, I have received very strong research support both internally and externally. I was able to graduate five Ph.D. students and have developed a current research group consisting of more than 10 Ph.D. students, research associates and visiting professors; have published about nine journal papers per year on average; and have received two national awards. The hard work is also rewarding. I have held a few prestigious professional positions, such as associate editor, committee chair and elected a Fellow of American Society of Civil Engineers. Internally, I was promoted early from assistant professor to associate professor and promoted early from associate professor to full professor (Pending on LSU Board of Supervisorsí final approval).
