Ian Binns

Associate Professor
Science Education
College of Education

What was your previous position and where?

I was a Ph.D. student in the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va.

What brought you to LSU?

A friend who attended LSU as an undergrad suggested that I apply for the position. After the interview, I was excited about the many possible opportunities here.

What is your research interest?

I have two research areas that I am most interested in. My primary research interest is the nature of science and more specifically, scientific methodology or the work of scientists. My other research interest is the use of educational technology in science classrooms.

What do you hope to accomplish at LSU?

I hope that my research in the nature of science can help improve teachersí and studentsí understandings of the work of scientists. My overall goal is to improve the publicís understanding of the nature of science and the work of scientists as well as the publicís overall science literacy.

What do you enjoy most about LSU?

I really like the supportive environment in my department. I also feel that LSU has a lot of potential, which is exciting for a new professor.

What are your major accomplishments?

I am proud of the relationship we have established with NASA. Another professor started a really interesting program for current teachers with NASA the year before I got here and we worked on it together this past summer. This program is starting to get more attention and will hopefully continue to grow over the next few years. This provides teachers with a unique opportunity to learn about the different types of jobs affiliated with NASA.
