David Baker

David Baker

Director and Professor, Laboratory Animal Medicine
Attending Veterinarian for LSU
Primary Care Veterinarian for Mike VI, LSU's live tiger mascot
School of Veterinary Medicine

What was your previous position and where?

Prior to coming to LSU in 1995, I was in a residency training program in laboratory animal medicine at the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.

What brought you to LSU?

The faculty position I was recruited into here at LSU offered the right blend of research, teaching and clinical responsibilities. Also, the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine has the largest faculty of parasitology of any U.S. school of veterinary medicine. My graduate degrees are in parasitology and I wanted to work with the LSU faculty in that group.

What is your research interest?

My research interests are primarily in the field of infectious diseases of laboratory animals.

What do you hope to accomplish at LSU?

I hope to continue to improve the operation and financial efficiency of LSU's research animal resource service and to continue to mentor veterinary students.

What do you enjoy most about LSU?

I most enjoy mentoring veterinary students and contributing in any way that I can to the successful operation of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine.

What are your major accomplishments?

None of my accomplishments have been achieved without the help of my colleagues and coworkers. With that, I suppose my major accomplishments include modernizing LSU's research animal resource service, developing a cost accounting system for the division, mentoring veterinary students and young veterinarians into successful and rewarding careers, and bringing Mike VI to LSU.
