Mark Acierno

Mark Acierno

Associate Professor
Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences
LSU School of Veterinary Medicine

What was your previous position and where?

Before joining the LSU faculty, I completed an internal medicine residency at Tufts University. After my residency, I stayed at Tufts for a period of time as “visiting faculty” working in their veterinary dialysis center. At the time, this was one of only four dialysis centers in North America.

What brought you to LSU?

There were many factors instrumental in bringing my family and me to LSU. First, LSU's reputation as an up and coming land-grant university was an important factor. The metropolitan location with its close proximity to New Orleans seemed ideal to establish a veterinary urology/nephrology and dialysis program. Lastly, my wife, who is a physician, was offered a faculty position with the LSU Health Sciences Center.

What is your research interest?

My research interests are kidney disease and renal replacement technologies.

What do you hope to accomplish at LSU?

My goal is establish the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine as the premiere veterinary urology/nephrology program in the country.

What do you enjoy most about LSU?

Apart from being able to live in a place that is so rich in culture, LSU offers unparalleled opportunities for collaboration and research.

What are your major accomplishments?

My major accomplishment at LSU has been being voted "Teacher of the Year" by the classes of 2010 and 2012. After all, the students are why we are in academia.
