Researchers get funding on Cyber Security, Terrorism and Sensor Networks
Researchers Peter Chen, Sitharama Iyengar, Rajgopal Kannan and others from the LSU Computer Science Department have received over $2.5 million from the Prestigious National Science Foundation that could result in very important breakthrough research endeavors and advances in cyber security, terrorism and Sensor Networks. Those advances could include improved potable techniques for Cyber Security and detecting biologicaland chemical warfare techniques.

Chen, a world-renowned leader in database techniques is the principal investigator for the Cyber Security project, which amounts to $1.8 million from the National Science Foundation.

On Distributed Sensor Networking project, Iyengar and Kannan are leaders in the area of using sensors for detecting various objects in space using the idea of Data Security and applications. Iyengar is a leader in this area who was one of the co-introducers of the Sensor Network concept in 1991 in a journal, IEEE, SMC and now has become an emerging area of technology (Published by MIT).

LSU Foundation Staff Awards Announced
The 2003 LSU Foundation Staff Awards reception will be held Nov. 6, at 1:30 p.m. in the Faculty Club. Winners from LSU are Celeste Carney, Student Health Center; Gay Crain, Accounting Services/Payroll; Angela Fleming, Electrical & Computer Engineering; Lisa Launey, College of Engineering; Mary Jo Neathery, Department of Economics; Suzanne Rollins, Office of the Chancellor; Mark M. Shaw, LSU Police Department and Jan Shoemaker, University College. From the LSU Agricultural Center recipients are Ann Coulon, Human Resource Management; Kenneth D. Henderson, Red River Research Station; Charlotte Hornsby, Southeast Research Station and Rhonda Shepard, Biological & Agricultural Engineering. The winner from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center is Wanda Hofstad, Human Resource Management.

Ocean Commotion Needs Volunteers
Volunteers are needed to help with Ocean Commotion, a one-day event scheduled for Thursday Nov. 6, on the concourse of the LSU Maravich Assembly Center. The event is designed to teach K-8th graders the importance of being good stewards for the coast and sea.
