NETWORKING

ITS-NI supports an extensive data network for the LSU campus that consists of hard wired connections at speeds up to 10 Gbps providing connectivity to the Internet, Internet2 and the National Lamba Rail. Connection speeds for individual computers range from 10 Mbps to 1 Gbps copper connections. Individual connection speeds on campus depend on location and the swittching gear that supports that given location.

TCP/IP is the sole OSI Layer 3 supported protocol used on the LSU network. Other protocols may be used, but shall be confined to the local subnet. Ownership and control of the LSU IP space resides with NI. Any changes that need be made to IP spaces will be coordinated with departments to insure no interruption of service.

IPv6 is currently not supported on the LSU network. Plans are being made for LONI to support IPv6 to Internet2 and NLR. Once these plans are finalized, LSU will follow suit.

Multicast will be fully supported during phase 2 of the network 2010 project.

All services for wiring, configuration changes, access list changes, routing changes, must be requested by filling out a request for Telecommunications form. Lead time for non-billable device configuration type changes will be 48 hours. Lead times for wiring jobs and port activations will vary and depend on the size of the request.

To get connected to the LSU Campus Network or to request changes mentioned above, please fill out and submit the Network Infrastructure Service Form.

If you are having difficulty connecting to the network after reviewing these instructions and need further help, call the Help Desk at (225) 578-3375.
