Workers' Compensation

    This policy pays benefits prescribed by the Louisiana Worker’s Compensation Law to or on behalf of an employee who receives an injury arising out of and in the course of employment. Coverage extends to all University employees, including student workers. 

    A University employee who suffers injury or illness arising out of and during the course of his/her employment is entitled to all necessary medical, surgical, hospital services and medicines or any non-medical treatment recognized by the State’s laws as legal.

    Generally, the Law provides for the payment of medical expenses recommended by the attending physician, including hospitalization. Injured employees who have filed a claim under the Workers’ Compensation Act should not file a claim for reimbursement for medical and hospitalization expenses under their personal insurance program. These programs specifically exclude payment of benefits for cases covered, in whole or in part, by the Workers’ Compensation Insurance Program.

    LSU administration of the Workers’ Compensation Program is assigned to the LSU Office Risk Management. Issues in Workers’ Compensation cases that involve the Americans with Disabilities Act and other employer-employee matters are assigned to the LSU Office of Human Resource Management.

    All workers’ compensation activities involving employees should be conducted through the LSU Office of Risk Management.

    Excerpt from PS-12:  

    Use of Sick and Annual Leave to Supplement Worker's Compensation

    1. When an employee is absent from work due to disabilities for which he/she is entitled to Worker's Compensation, the employee must use sick leave to supplement Worker's Compensation payments so long as the combination of the value of the leave and Worker's Compensation payments does not exceed the employee's regular salary.
    2. An employee may be granted annual leave, so long as the combination of annual leave and Worker's Compensation payments do not exceed the employee's regular salary. Approval of annual leave for worker's compensation must be approved by the Office of Human Resource Management.
