The Human Resource and Leadership Development (HRLD) program concentration prepares students for human resource development and training careers in business, industry, government, and/or academia.

The B.S program strongly accentuates practical application of methods derived from education and training, and HRD research. Achieving organizational goals through current HRD practices receives strong emphasis as the student moves through the program. Practical experience through internships and the involvement of practicing professionals form the surrounding business and government community reinforces the accent on the application of Human Resource and Leadership Development knowledge.

Students have the flexibility to tailor a course of study to meet career objectives. Within the HRLD curriculum, student may choose 3 primary areas of specialization: organizational HRD, E-learning, and organizational consulting. Students may also choose a secondary specialization in adult literacy, international, aging populations, or community development.

Faculty advisors exert critical influence over the student's college experience. Commensurate with the school's philosophy of maximum student involvement in degree program design, the student is expected to take a significant role in selecting a faculty member to fill this position. The faculty advisor assumes responsibility for guidance and supervision of the student's program of study. The advisor assists in identification of appropriate coursework and practical experiences to meet the student's career objectives.

The Master’s program focuses on transferring advanced knowledge about current theory and research in HRLD into practical applications. The program helps students develop and strengthen professional competency that effectively matches their special needs and career objectives.

The graduate programs in HRLD have achieved a “superior” rating (the highest possible) in LSU’s rigorous program review process.  It is generally viewed as one of the top programs in the U.S.

The program is specially designed to meet the needs of working adult students as well as full-time students. All graduate courses are taught in the evening from 4:30 – 7:30 pm.  Because so many working professionals are enrolled in the program, classes are a dynamic adult learning environment in which students share experiences from a wide variety of organizational settings and apply new learning to those environments. Students learn from each other as much as from the professors.

Faculty advisors play as facilitator role to motivate students' learning and prepare for career planning.

The Ph.D. program strongly emphasizes linking theory, research and practice through scholarly research and preparing students to be competitive scholars and reflective practitioners in the field as they move through the program.

Unlike many other disciplines, the Ph.D in HRLD is as valuable in practice as it is for an academic career. The program is flexible enough to allow students to tailor their degree program to prepare them for advanced practice or for an academic career.

Degree Requirements:

The Human Resource Development and Leadership Development concentration B.S. degree requires 128 semester hours broken down as follows:

  • 39 hours in university general education
  • 34 hours in Human Resource Education professional core
  • 19 hours in Human Resource Development core
  • 24 hours in HRLD/Adult Education specialization electives
  • 19 hours in general electives
Degree Requirements:

Human Resource and Leadership Development concentration M.S. degree (non-thesis option) requires 36 semester hours minimum broken down as follows:.

  • 30 hours core courses.
  • 6 hours specialization electives.

 

Degree Requirements:

Human Resource and Leadership Development Development concentration Ph.D. degree requires 90 semester hours minimum past the Bachelor's level (including hours in your master’s program) broken down as follows:

  • 9 hours required HRLD core courses
  • select additional hours from among 21 hours of core courses and 39 hours of electives within the department
  • 30 hour research core.

Flexibility to incorporate electives from other departments such as management or industrial psychology
