purple martinJoin Harriett Pooler, avid bird watcher, naturalist for over 25 years, and board member of the Friends of Hilltop Arboretum and Louisiana Ornithological Society, for an early morning walking tour (1.5 hours) to discover and observe resident and migrant birds at the LSU Hilltop Arboretum.

March is the in-between time when Spring migrants are arriving in Louisiana and the winter residents have not all left yet. Spring migration has started so we will look for early migrants such as Northern Parulas, Prothonotary Warblers, and Purple Martins. Lingering winter residents we might see include Cedar Waxwings, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, and Ruby-crowned Kinglets. Additionally, we could see some of the year round resident birds including the Barred owl named Silverbell, Eastern Bluebirds, Pine Warblers, Red-shouldered Hawks, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Carolina Wrens, Tufted Titmouse, and Northern Cardinals. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars and bug spray if it is humid.

The tour is designed to maintain appropriate social distancing between participants.  Harriett will use a wireless headset transmitter and each participant will use a headset receiver for the tour.

Meet outside at the entry breezeway by the Cherry Owens Library at 6:45am to check-in and get your headset in place. Be sure to dress appropriately for walking around Hilltop. We’ll start the tour at 7:00am and finish up by 8:30am.

As always, the early bird gets the worm! Space is limited to 15 participants and the session is now filled.
