Magic in Motion

An exciting new study abroad program for international students combines coursework with Orlando internship

A magical experience awaits international exchange students enrolled in a new Department of Kinesiology program in the LSU College of Education. These students have the opportunity to combine classroom instruction at LSU with professional sports administration experience at what is billed as “The Happiest Place on Earth.”

This exciting new study abroad program for international students combines coursework with a paid internship at Walt Disney World® Resort near Orlando, Florida.

“This program presents students with a fun and innovative way to gain the knowledge and experience that is absolutely essential to be successful in the field of sports administration,” said Dee Jacobsen, Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology.

The internship offers a variety of sport and recreation activities including fitness centers, surfing, parasailing, horseback riding, bass fishing, scuba diving, canoeing, biking, and water skiing.

In addition, Walt Disney World® has earned a reputation as a golf haven. It was one of 25 resorts to earn a gold medal designation in the 2004 edition of Golf Magazine’s biennial evaluation of America’s great resorts.

The 220-acre Disney’s Wide World of Sports® Complex is the pre-season training destination of choice for the Atlanta Braves and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The mile-long, tri-oval Walt Disney World® Speedway hosts the Richard Petty Driving Experience.

In these settings, students gain knowledge of cultural preferences, international sport governance, federations, television networks, and corporate sponsorships.

“Students will be able to apply their knowledge to a variety of exciting settings and at the same time, meet and work with a diverse group of mentors, faculty, and peers from across the globe,” said Amelia Lee. Lee—the program’s coordinator—recently retired as chair of the Department of Kinesiology.

There are two different program models for international students to choose from: LSU Gold and LSU Purple.

LSU Gold is a two-semester program. Students arrive at LSU in January, live on campus, and take 12 credit hours as a group. The courses will be taught by faculty in the College of Education Department of Kinesiology. Classes will include “History and Philosophy of Kinesiology,” “Introduction to Sport and Leisure Administration,” “Practicum in Sports Studies,” and “Sport in Society.”

While at LSU, students will have the advantage of hands-on experience with NCAA Division I athletics and professional teams. LSU has one of the most successful athletic programs in the nation, and the NFL’s Saints, the NBA’s Hornets, and AAA affiliate of MLB’s Florida Marlins the Zephyrs are located in nearby New Orleans.

The LSU Purple program is the model for students in the English Language and Orientation Program (ELOP). Students participate in four or eight weeks of English language proficiency training custom-designed for this program by ELOP at LSU. All basic courses are taught by faculty with advanced degrees specializing in English as a second language, English, foreign languages, and education. Every ELOP faculty member has also worked or traveled abroad extensively.

International students will also have the opportunity to gain an inside look at LSU athletic administration through seminars, learning activities, and cultural events at and around LSU. The classes will take place on campus with cultural excursions to New Orleans, Lafayette, and surrounding areas.

After completing the LSU portion, students will travel to Walt Disney World®. Students will then participate in a paid internship while still meeting the requirements of-full-time study at LSU. Students will enroll in one collegiate course, such as “Corporate Communication” or “Organizational Leadership,” and one Disney Exploration Series course, such as “Exploring Marketing” or “Exploring Leadership.” In addition, students will participate in a sports administration internship for six credit hours.

“This program for international students developed by the Department of Kinesiology and Walt Disney World® represents one example of our goal to build partnerships to create unique learning opportunities for our students,” said Gilmour Reeve, Department of Kinesiology Chair.

“This international program will help provide intercultural learning experiences for students and enhance cross-cultural awareness,” said College of Education Dean M. Jayne Fleener. “It offers international students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
