LSU ranked in U.S. News & World Report’s top tier!
Letter to the LSU Community from Chancellor Michael V. Martin
August 22, 2008
As the newly installed Chancellor of LSU, I am both pleased and proud to announce to the campus that in the just-released 2009 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s America’s Best Colleges, LSU is ranked in the first tier for “Best National Universities” for the first time.
This accomplishment means that the nation now recognizes what we have always known – that LSU is one of America’s best universities. You should all be extremely proud of your university, and of yourselves, for making a difference at this critical point in LSU’s history.
This ranking is also proof that LSU’s Flagship Agenda is working. That plan has done what it was designed to do — improve LSU’s stature on a national level. Since the inception of the Flagship Agenda in 2003, the university has recruited top-quality students and hired many outstanding faculty members. In addition, LSU’s graduation rates, freshman ACT scores and faculty-to-student-ratio have all improved.
But, this does not mean that we should be satisfied. Now that we are in the top tier, we must work to stay there, and continue to improve. Great universities never stop trying to get better.
I want to thank each and every one of you for your hard work and dedication to LSU. From the faculty, to the students, to the staff, you have all played a significant role in this accomplishment. Now, I ask you to take this victory and press on, stepping up your efforts and capitalizing on this achievement to accomplish even more in the future.
I would also like to thank the current and past Governors and Legislators for their financial investments in higher education as a whole, and at LSU, specifically. The infusion of public funds provided to LSU during the past few legislative sessions has shown the nation that our state is serious about its flagship university.
For those who would like more information about the rankings, highlights of the rankings will be published in the Sept. 1 issue of U.S. News & World Report, available on newsstands Monday, Aug. 25. The 2009 America’s Best Colleges guidebook will be available on Tuesday, Aug. 26.
Congratulations and warmest regards,
Michael V. Martin, Chancellor
