Success as a Freshman
Other Helpful Resources
on Campus
|
|
A student's first year at LSU is a whirlwind of activity. Aside
from making new friends and managing a demanding college-level schedule,
the campus offers its own diversions, including sporting events,
live music and theater performances, and a variety of student organizations.
LSU is truly a city within a city, and finding the right balance
among these options can make or break a student in the first year
of college.
Fortunately for the freshmen at LSU, the resources they need to
succeed are located right on the LSU campus. The University challenges
its students to reach higher levels of excellence so that each person
can flourish and grow. To do this, LSU provides a network of academic,
social, and emotional support.

"If we get them in early,
we can steer them in the right direction."

For some freshmen, the transition from high school to college is
more challenging than expected. Aside from meeting new people, learning
how to get around on campus, and fitting in to a new social setting,
freshmen must adapt to college-level scholastic demands. LSU's
University College
Center for Freshman Year (UCFY) offers help and guidance to
any student who requests it.
"During their freshman year, students most often ask for help
with time management, study skills, and career choices," said
Paul Ivey, UCFY associate dean. Students typically exit the UCFY
at the end of their freshman year and enter one of LSU's degree-granting
senior colleges.
Academically, the supportive faculty of LSU are a lifeline to entering
freshmen. Faculty hold regular office hours to counsel students
on how to succeed in their classes, as well as mentor students through
academic life. Freshmen can also use the services of the Center
for Academic Success, which offers tutoring, development of
study strategy development, and test-taking techniques.
During the 2003 - 04 year, nearly 14 percent of LSU freshmen entered
LSU undecided. The staff at Career
Services offers career testing assessments to help students
choose majors that can help them meet their career goals.

"I encourage freshmen I know to
talk to counselors at the UCFY. Whether it's problems
with scheduling classes or picking a major, they can
lead you in the right direction."

For freshmen at LSU, the social activities and offerings are abundant.
With so much to do on campus, a freshman would be smart to pick
from any of the more than 300 student organizations, including social,
service, Greek, honorary, student government, or professional clubs.
Current students say that joining a club is the fastest way to meet
new friends with similar interests. But you don't have to join a
student group to have an amazing college experience. Activities
designed by the Office
of Student Life & Academic Services as well as the LSU
Union and the Department
of Residential Life can keep you busy. With events like Fall
Fest, Groovin' on the Grounds, and our exciting athletic
events, the University has something planned nearly every day
of the week.
LSU also has a staff of counselors who can help students sort out
personal conflicts and struggles. Finally, the LSU
Recreational Sports Center offers students the facilities and
machinery to exercise and keep the body in shape as well as provide
a variety of club
sports to join.
With everything LSU has to offer, freshmen have a network of support
so they become successful in and out of the classroom.
