Have you ever made a bad grade on a test and wondered what went wrong? Have you studied hard and felt good about your preparation, only to discover that you were not ready for the test lying in front of you?
Even the best students at LSU are sometimes overwhelmed by the challenges they face in college. The LSU Center for Academic Success (CAS) strives to help students better prepare for college life by offering programs including tutorial services, supplemental instruction, and computer application workshops. CAS is dedicated to serving as a safety net for students experiencing academic anxiety and stress.
One area in which students are significantly reaping benefits is in improving study habits through the Study Strategy Assistance program. Many students have a tough time bridging the gap between high school study habits and college study habits. CAS offers individual assistance and instructor-led workshops to teach useful strategies for maximizing a student's performance. –Most students don't know how to study, or even how to learn. And they certainly don't know how to teach themselves how to learn,” said Saundra McGuire, CAS director. –Students must be shown strategies for learning, nurtured to use those strategies, and given the confidence that they can excel in any course.” The CAS has helped many students to substantially improve their grade point average and is proud of all the students who improved their skills and study habits using the resources of the Center.
The center's Web site also offers online workshops to sharpen a variety of skills, including time management, test preparation, listening, and note taking. You can even take a diagnostics test on the Web to discover your personal learning style.
The services of the CAS are free to LSU students.
