Raw Strength —Not just another sports club
Getting
involved in a campus activity can be one of the most rewarding experiences
of campus life. Whether you prefer to perform community service
or compete in a club sport, LSU offers students hundreds of campus
organizations to join.
The
Powerlifting Club of LSU is one of 23 sport clubs offered by
the LSU Department of Recreational
Sports. The 22-member team, including seven female participants,
turned their love of weight training into a nationally competitive
team.
The LSU men’s team took third place out of 35
other teams in the collegiate national championships, organized
by the U.S.
Association of Powerlifting, last spring in St. Louis, Missouri.
Almost all of the LSU men placed in the top five of their weight
class. After several competitions this year, teammate Steve McLawchlin
qualified to compete in the junior world championships this fall
in Poland.
The
LSU women’s team, last year’s second place collegiate
champion, also had good news to celebrate. Team member Jan Morello,
an LSU sophomore, won the collegiate national championship for her
weight class and also qualified to compete this fall in Poland in
the junior world championships.
Training side-by-side three or four times a week,
the team is extremely close and spends a great deal of time together
in and out of the LSU Recreation Center weight room. They study
hard, train hard, and make the same kind of personal sacrifices
as other student athletes.
Fortunately
for LSU, Coaches Arval Bridges and Paul Fletcher, both nationally-ranked
powerlifters themselves, volunteer a great deal of time and expertise
to the team. Faculty adviser Carolyn Jacobs works out with the team
on a regular basis. “I have watched students
begin in their freshman year, catch the vision of the team, grow,
mature, and grasp onto team responsibilities,” says
Ms. Jacobs.
Powerlifting is not a recognized NCAA sport so the
team must do fundraising to cover expenses. They raise money by
holding small meets on campus or car washes and they have helped
to remodel and repair a friend’s home in Houston.
For these LSU students, finding their campus family
has made all the difference in the world.
