| LSU Creates National Center For Security Research
And Training
During
this time of terrorism, war, and heightened homeland security, LSU
has created a new center focused on national security research and
training. The center brings together the expertise of several existing
units on campus that deal with safety and security.
The National Center for Security Research and Training combines
the resources of LSU's Anti-Terrorism Assistance Program (ATAP)
and the National
Center for Biomedical Research and Training, which includes
the Academy for
Counter-Terrorist Education (ACE). The new center also brings
together LSU's Law Enforcement
Online (LEO) program, the Fire
and Emergency Training Institute (FETI), and the Law
Enforcement Training Program (LETP).
In
addition, the center works with the LSU Agricultural Center, the
LSU Medical Center, the LSU Law Center, the LSU School of Veterinary
Medicine, other institutions, and state and federal agencies to
coordinate training and research efforts.
The intent of the center is to capitalize on the programs and
faculty experience within these units and to partner the University
with private and public entities that share an interest in furthering
knowledge and expertise in areas related to safety, security, and
emergency preparedness.
"LSU is a leader in this area, and bringing all of these
units under one umbrella organization will allow us to do things
that were not possible before," said Jim Fernandez, executive
director of the center. "Each one of these units does a great
job as a stand-alone program, and I know with all of us working
together, the possibilities are endless."
Fernandez was employed by LSU from 1991 until August 2002 in a
number of different capacities and has returned to accept this new
position with the center.
"LSU has a number of existing departments
and programs that are making significant contributions in research
and training relevant to national security, safety, and emergency
preparedness," LSU Chancellor Mark Emmert said. "Consolidating
these programs within one center will create a nationally preeminent
collection of expertise to address the critical issue of homeland
security."
