| Rewriting the record books
Six
straight Southeastern Conference (SEC) Western Division titles and
four straight overall SEC Championships to go along with a season-ranking
of ninth nationally last year might lead some to think of Skip Bertman’s
dominant LSU baseball teams. But to the diehard LSU fan, another
sport may come to mind—LSU softball.
Success has not always been synonymous with LSU softball. The
program began in 1979 but was dropped in 1981. It was not until
1997 that the latest version of the Lady Tigers was created. Since
this rebirth, the team has rewritten NCAA record books.

Head
coach Yvette Girouard said, “I think this program will
always be at the top of the SEC leaders.”
If her performance is any indication, Girouard’s opinion
is right on the money. In 2001, her first season as head coach,
Girouard led the Lady Tigers to their first World Series appearance.
Girouard received the honor of being named the Louisiana and
SEC Coach of the Year in 2001. |

With the graduation of All-American players Britni Sneed and Trena
Peel, Girouard is confident that new players will step up and provide
the leadership needed for another successful year. Over the span
of her career, Sneed was a defensive powerhouse for the Lady Tigers.
She finished her career as the LSU and SEC career-strikeout leader
and ranked fourth in NCAA history in strikeouts. Peel also etched
her name in the record books, as she holds the LSU and SEC single-season
records in triples. She finished her career ranked fourth in triples
in NCAA history.

Girouard is excited about the upcoming season. “Our strength
may lie in offense, but really, we play very good defense. I have
always thought that my teams will be fundamentally sound, as defense
is a special passion of mine,” said Girouard, adding that
her team’s strengths on the field will once again yield a
successful season.
The Lady Tigers begin their 2003 season with the LSU Tiger Classic
in Baton Rouge on February 7 against Stephen F. Austin State University.
Their season runs through May with home games played at the 1,000-seat
Tiger Park softball facility on the LSU campus.
