LSU Theatre Students Perform Original Works by Young Local Playwrights Shakespeare, Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, and Neil Simon—all these are great playwrights, but who will be the voice of the next millennium? Last spring semester, with the help of the LSU Department of Theatre, eighth graders from St. Aloysius School in Baton Rouge wrote more than 60 original plays. The plays were then submitted for review by LSU Theatre students, who performed three of the works for the audience of young playwrights. “The Chess Match” featured the tale of a boy faced with a dilemma between greed and strength. “Once Upon a Time” recounted the adventures of familiar storybook characters in one mixed-up fairy tale. The last play, “A Fulfillment of Dreams,” was a teenage love story. Through the program a new generation of playwrights was able to discover and express their voices by the use of stories and dramatic arts. Sarah Miceli, the eighth-grade teacher said, “The plays benefitted my students by giving them a better understanding of script-writing and, most importantly, the element of cooperative learning that exists between the LSU students and my kids.” Last updated September 2002
