Increasing Number of LSU Students Inquiring About Peace Corps Opportunities Zack Poimboeuf, an LSU political science graduate, has chosen to leave behind the comforts of home and a regular 9-to-5 job to spend time working with the residents of Niger, one of Africa’s poorest countries. Poimboeuf is part of a growing trend at LSU: students interested in volunteering for the Peace Corps, the organization established by Congress in 1961 to “promote world peace and friendship.” LSU is now the second-leading college producer of Peace Corps volunteers in the state of Louisiana. Peace Corps representatives make regular recruiting visits to campus, and interest among students has spiked in recent years, going from 12 inquiries in 1998 to 149 in 2001. The Peace Corps reports that it is on course to break LSU’s record in 2002, with nearly 300 inquiries. Since 1988, more than half of the LSU students whose applications are selected by the Peace Corps have chosen to become volunteers. Current LSU volunteers are serving across the globe in countries such as Haiti, the Philippines, and the Dominican Republic. Since 1961, 164 LSU alumni have served the Peace Corps in 70 nations.
