Experience Through Service Through the M.B.A. Advisers Program, students in LSU’s Flores Master of Business Administration Program are gaining valuable “real-world” experience while making a difference in the Baton Rouge community. Each semester M.B.A. students examine and work with local businesses or charities that serve low-income areas. The students’ efforts help the organizations prosper and operate more effectively. The five-year-old program is sponsored by a grant from Louisiana-based Hibernia National Bank. During the spring 2002 semester, the LSU M.B.A. student advisory group studied two charitable organizations: Myriam’s House, a transitional housing and training program for homeless women, and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, where the students focused on the organization’s shelters for the homeless in the Baton Rouge area. Students were challenged with helping Myriam’s House find a way to improve operations at its thrift store, Myriam’s Closet, and to develop a fundraising strategy for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s shelters by making and selling praline candies. At the end of the semester, the students presented their recommendations to representatives from the nonprofit organizations, faculty from LSU’s E.J. Ourso College of Business Administration, and executives from Hibernia National Bank. Last updated September 2002
