Impacting the Local Community

Horticulture 2

Garden of Hope

President George W. Bush recently encouraged Americans to contribute and give back to their communities. At LSU’s Department of Horticulture Hill Farm Teaching Facility, members of student organizations, such as Spectrum Alliance and Student Environmental Action Coalition, are doing just that by planting, tending, and harvesting vegetables to donate to the Baton Rouge Women’s Shelter and the local food bank. The program, established in the fall of 2001, serves as a service project and provides educational resources for the students who participate.

“It’s just one way that we can do community service, plus it’s a social activity,” said Jason Avant, Spectrum Alliance member. The students are organizing into a separate student group, the Hill Farm Community Garden, with the goals of community service and education.
