Richard Peck, adjunct professor, receives National Humanities Medal Richard Peck, an adjunct professor with LSU’s School of Library and Information Science and acclaimed children’s author, was one of six recipients of the 2001 National Medal for Humanities. Peck and the other recipients were recognized in April at a special ceremony at the White House. During his career as an author, Peck has written more than 25 works. His novel A Year Down Yonder received a 2001 Newbery Award and five of his pieces have been made into television movies. In addition, Peck has held an adjunct position at LSU for more than 10 years. He teaches courses on young-adult services. A scholarship has been established in his name to help new librarians going into youth services. During his spare time, Peck also delivers lectures throughout the country. Established in 1988, the award honors individuals whose work has increased the nation’s understanding of the humanities, broadened citizens’ engagement with the humanities, or helped preserve and expand access to important resources in the humanities. After admiring the work First Lady Laura Bush has done to encourage reading and literacy, Peck said it was her choice to make him the first children’s writer to receive this award. Additional recipients of the 2001 National Humanities Medals were historical illustrator José Cisneros, child psychologist and Harvard professor Robert Coles, teacher and literacy advocate Sharon Darling, historian and author William Manchester, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Eight recipients of the 2001 Medals of Arts were also recognized at the same ceremony. Those honorees included the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation; author Rudolfo Anaya; singer and songwriter Johnny Cash; actor and producer Kirk Douglas; painter Helen Frankenthaler; artistic director, choreographer, and dancer Judith Jamison; cellist Yo-Yo Ma; and director and producer Mike Nichols.
