New Residential College Program attracts Tech-Savvy Students In higher education, as in the business world, being on the cutting edge of technology is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity. Taking this, as well as the demands of today’s more sophisticated student into account, LSU has created a new residential college program centered around information technology (I.T.). The I.T. Residential College in Graham Hall, which welcomes its first class in fall 2002, is a unique program for incoming freshmen interested in learning computer applications and developing their I.T. skills and expertise, regardless of their academic backgrounds or focuses. Throughout their freshman year, participants in the I.T. Residential College will take specially designed courses that emphasize hands-on activities and the uses of many computer applications and technology. For instance, the I.T. Residential College writing program offers training and practice in formal, professional writing, as well as development of I.T. skills through Web-based research, document design, and PowerPoint presentations. The I.T. Residential College also features two SMART classrooms (Shared Multimedia Access to Resources for Teaching). These state-of-the-art classrooms create new opportunities in teaching and learning by integrating computer, multimedia, and network technology, all in a wireless environment. The SMART classrooms contain laser printers, networked scanners, overhead projectors, two digital cameras, and an adjacent computer lab open 24 hours a day. While many other institutions of higher learning use SMART classrooms, LSU is one of the few universities in the country to offer this virtual learning experience within an actual residence hall. The I.T. Residential College is the latest addition in LSU’s ongoing development of its residential college programs. These programs create living/learning communities designed to enhance the college learning experience. By living with peers who have similar interests, students enjoy learning environments both inside and outside the classroom. In addition to the I.T. Residential College in Graham Hall, LSU also offers the Herget and McVoy Residential Colleges for first-year students, the Laville Honors House for the Honors College, and the French Learning Community for students interested in a French immersion program. The Economic Development Residential College is scheduled to open fall 2003. Last updated September 2002
