LSU Students Win at International Engineering Design Contest Two teams of environmental engineering students from LSU won several first- and second-place awards including an overall first-place award in waste management at the 12th annual International Environmental Design Contest held at New Mexico State University. The contest featured more than 350 students representing 25 universities throughout the United States, India, and Mexico. Sponsored by the Western Environmental Research Consortium (WERC), the contest challenged teams to provide solutions to environmental problems submitted by private industry and government agencies. One LSU team project developed and demonstrated a separation technology for treatment of explosive-contaminated soil in a safe and cost-effective manner. The other LSU team developed and demonstrated a cost-effective method to remove uranium from drinking water. Both teams had to consider the regulations around their proposals, legal issues, public participation, and overall cost to finance. Last updated September 2002
