Inspiring Great Works LSU has served as the starting place for countless influential writers of this century. Robert Penn Warren, Robert Lowell, Jean Stafford, Walker Percy, Miller Williams, Valerie Martin, and John Gregory Brown, along with many others, were associated with LSU as students, editors, or teachers. Today, LSU continues to produce some of the great writers of tomorrow. The LSU Creative Writing Program in the Department of English mentors undergraduate and graduate students seeking Bachelor of Art (B.A.) or Master of Fine Art (M.F.A.) degrees in the areas of screenwriting, playwriting, translation, fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. The program boasts an impressive list of more than 100 LSU M.F.A. alumni who have published more than 50 books, with additional books coming out each year. In addition to establishing themselves as writers, graduates of the program have become notable editors in the literary world or teachers at other prestigious universities. Alumni from the M.F.A. program include Barbadian poet Tony Lewis, nonfiction writer Dinty Moore, novelist and best selling children's book author Connie Porter, metafictionist Jacques Servine, novelist and anthologist Virgil Suarez, and fiction writer and translator Betsy Wing. New York film critic Rex Reed, political strategist and writer James Carville, and novelist John Ed Bradley also took creative writing classes at LSU. Many young writers have chosen LSU's Creative Writing Program because of the supportive and talented faculty, which includes several nationally prominent writers. Among the faculty are novelist James Gordon Bennett; screenwriter Rick Blackwood; poet, journalist, National Public Radio commentator, editor, and film maker Andrei Codrescu; fiction writer Moira Crone; playwright and director Femi Euba; non-fiction writer and poet Rodger Kamenetz; and novelist and literary anthologist David Madden. Novelist James Wilcox recently joined the LSU English department as the new director of the Creative Writing Program. Last updated September 2002
