Vet School breaking ground on cancer
treatment facility

The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine
broke ground on its Cancer Treatment Unit and Radiation Therapy Facility
after a two-year capital campaign to raise the funds for construction.
The cancer treatment unit will offer Louisiana residents a full-service
cancer therapy center for their pets, including radiation treatment, chemotherapy,
and surgery.
The 2,000 square-foot facility will be the first of its kind in Louisiana
and will be a leading center nationally for cancer treatment. The veterinary
school receives six to eight cancer referrals a week and treats approximately
700 cancer patients a year. LSUs oncologists currently treat cancer
patients with chemotherapy and surgery. The new cancer treatment unit
will be a state-of-the-art facility, housing a radiation therapy unit,
a dedicated chemotherapy suite, a radioactive iodine room, and 3-D radiation
therapy planning.
