LSU Museums
The LSU campus houses eight museums that feature original works by students
as well as traveling exhibits by local, national, and international artisans.
The LSU Museum of Art, located
in the base of the LSU Memorial Tower was originally opened in 1962 as
the Anglo-American Art Museum. The museum was created to showcase original
English and American room interiors, paintings, and furniture to remind
people of the British influence on American culture. In 1991 as the museums
collections began to celebrate more artists and styles from around the
world and as it began to accrue impressive collections of Louisiana art,
the name was changed to the LSU Museum of Art. Today the museum's permanent
collection includes British and American decorative and fine arts, as
well as works by Louisiana and southern artists, including George E. Ohr,
Clementine Hunter, Caroline Wogan Durieux, and Adrien Persac.
The museum also houses an impressive collection of New Orleans silver
and Newcomb Pottery from Newcomb College, which is part of Tulane University.
In addition to its permanent collection, the museum also hosts traveling
exhibits throughout the year. Several artists whose work has been displayed
in the LSU Memorial Tower have also enriched the lives of LSUs art
students by conducting master classes. Earlier this year, Chinese artists
from the House of Benevolent Learning shared their skills in pottery and
porcelain with LSU students. Samples from the permanent collection will
remain on display from now through August 1. The museum is free and is
open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 1 to 4 p.m.
on weekends. The museum is closed on Mondays.
