LSU cancer researcher studying the biology of brain
tumors
A new faculty member in the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, Dario
Marchetti, is continuing research funded by the National Institutes of
Health to determine why and how cells are able to travel, grow, and colonize
in the brain, a process called metastasis. Marchettis long-term
research objective is to develop innovative treatments to stop tumor progression
and colonization in the brain. With the conclusions from his previous
findings and by using newly developed molecular probes and antibodies,
Marchetti will narrow his current study by focusing on the biology and
regulation of neurotrophins. This research will benefit understanding
of malignant melanoma, which presents one of the highest frequencies of
brain metastasis. It will also improve understanding of lung and breast
cancer formation, which heavily metastasize to the brain, Marchetti
said.
