Mike the Tiger LSUs mascot is a Royal Bengal Tiger named Mike. Mike the Tiger attracts more than 100,000 visitors each year and is one of the most important symbols of LSUs school spirit. He is the fifth tiger to be named after former LSU football trainer, Mike Chambers, who was largely responsible for finding Mike I in 1936. Housing and caring for a wild animal is a responsibility that the University and the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine take very seriously. Tigers in the wild usually live between eight and twelve years, but LSUs tiger mascots have averaged lives of 20 years. Plans are under way to build a new home for Mike, one that would increase the size of his current cage several times. Designers of Mikes new home are also planning to use the latest in technology to replicate the natural surroundings of a Bengal tiger in the wild. The Tiger Athletic Foundation (TAF), along with campus student organizations, have begun the I Like Mike Campaign to raise money for the project. Last updated April 2002
