LSU's Marshall Scholar Ebony Spikes, a senior in biochemistry, recently became the fourth LSU student to receive the prestigious Marshall Scholarship. Established to build and further relationships between the United States and the United Kingdom, the award funds two to three years of study in the U.K. for some of the brightest students. Spikes was one of 40 U.S. students selected for the award. She will study psychology, philosophy, and physiology at Oxford University in England beginning in October 2002. During her enrollment at LSU, the Louisiana native has worked closely with some of the University's top faculty, including LSU Boyd professors Isiah Warner and Meredith Blackwell. Last summer, Spikes declined internships at Columbia, Yale, Cornell, and Johns Hopkins and opted to stay at LSU and work on her honors thesis with Blackwell. Two years ago, Spikes completed an internship at Harvard Universitys School of Public Health. After graduating from LSU in May 2002 and completing her coursework at Oxford, Spikes plans to pursue her Ph.D. and M.D. There are many outstanding faculty members at LSU who often go unrecognized for their dedication to teaching students. These professors are not only concerned with students grasping academic subject-matter but are also concerned with students grasping an understanding of the character which facilitates success in the larger matter of life.Ebony Spikes
