Audubon Hall
Built in 1924, LSU's John J. Audubon Hall is named for the eminent ornithologist,
painter, and author. In 1820 Audubon and his wife, Lucy, moved to Louisiana,
where he painted birds in their natural surroundings. Audubon taught drawing
for a short time at Oakley Plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana,
and worked on the collection that would make him famous. Audubon published
Birds of America (18261838), a work of 87 parts containing
435 life-sized colored engravings made from his watercolors. LSUs
Hill Memorial Library owns a copy of the original Birds of America,
considered one of the librarys greatest treasures. Audubon Hall
now houses the Department of Psychology.
