LSU and the World Health Organization

Tracking Epidemics

LSU works closely with the World Health Organization (WHO) in tracking diseases throughout the globe. Martin Hugh-Jones of the School of Veterinary Medicine (left, with graduate research assistant Pamala Coker in the Special Pathogens Laboratory) is director of the WHO Collaborating Center for Remote Sensing & Geographic Information Systems for Public Health. The center, which is run by faculty in veterinary medicine, geography, and design, tracks worldwide outbreaks of human and animal diseases. This also includes the forensic aspects of anthrax outbreaks. The center’s data is shared with scientists throughout the world, making the tracking, treating, and control of diseases faster and more efficient.
