LSU Research-Warner

Mentoring Students

Boyd Professor Isiah Warner received the 1997 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring. Largely through Warner's mentoring and recruitment efforts, LSU has become a leader in training African American doctoral candidates in chemistry. Nearly 30 percent of the Department of Chemistry's doctoral students are African American, the highest percentage of any major chemistry department in the country. LSU expects to account for about half the nation's annual production of African American Ph.D.s in chemistry through the early years of the 21st century. In addition to his research in analytical chemistry, Warner is also vice chancellor of the Office of Strategic Initiatives, a new unit whose mission is to enhance LSU's diversity (especially at the graduate and faculty level) and to support the high achievements of all LSU students, faculty, and staff through education, mentoring, and research.
