LSU Information Technology

Expanding Information Technology

In 2001 the Louisiana legislature approved Governor Mike Foster's new Information Technology (I.T.) Initiative, aimed at expanding I.T. in three key areas: research, education, and economic development. The LSU Center for Applied Information Technology and Learning (known as LSU CAPITAL) will oversee the $7-9 million in annually recurring funds, guided by an external advisory panel. Supported by this initiative, LSU will build a Beowulf computer cluster, composed of more than 1,000 interconnected machines. This cluster will be one of the largest parallel computing systems in the country and will allow researchers to model hurricanes, forecasting damage to low-lying and populated regions of the Gulf coast. The system will also allow computational modeling of complex biological systems to help doctors track down cancer-causing genes and aid in the development of new pharmaceuticals.
