Eyeing the Storm When a hurricane threatens, the staff of LSU's Earth Scan Laboratory (ESL) immediately go on a 24-hour alert. The faculty, staff, and students who run the ESL track tropical storms and hurricanes using satellite imagery. They provide this crucial data to state and federal emergency response offices in near real time every 30 minutes, faster than the National Weather Service. ESL Director Oscar Huh and Associate Director Nan Walker are part of a team of experts that compose the new LSU Hurricane Center, the only university-run program of its kind in the world. The Hurricane Center's experts cover a wide range of disciplines and provide remote sensing of storm movement and intensification; prediction of surge and rainfall flooding; and assessment of damage to the natural, built, and human environments.
