LSU Allen Hall

Allen Hall

Oscar K. Allen Hall, one of the original 13 buildings that frame the Main Quadrangle, is home to the LSU English department and the esteemed literary journal The Southern Review, which was founded by Robert Penn Warren and Cleanth Brooks in 1935. While teaching at LSU, Warren began writing All the King's Men, a novel based on the Huey Long administration. To celebrate the release of a new edition of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel, LSU held a nine-day, campus-wide symposium, "Rediscovering All the King's Men," November 8-16. LSU Press has published a number of books by or about Warren, including The Collected Poems of Robert Penn Warren (edited by John Burt), winner of the 1998 Jules and Frances Landry Award.

Allen Hall's most distinguishing features are its four frescos, one of which was recently uncovered after having been hidden in layers of paint since the 1960s. The four murals were completed by LSU painting students in the 1930s. In 2001 LSU alumna Elise Grenier restored the paintings to their original splendor.
