FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

The LSU Food Science Club hosted their annual Awards Ceremony Dinner at Nelson Memorial on the LSU campus on November 20, 2008. Over 50 people attended the potluck event including students, faculty members, and friends and family.

Food Science departmental scholarships for 2008 – 2009 were awarded by Dr. J. Samuel Godber, Professor.  Graduate student scholarship winners were Feifei Han, who won the $1,000 Dr. John Barkate Fellowship, and Pamarin Waimaleongora-Ek, who won the $500 Dr. R. M. Grodner Scholarship.  Undergraduate winners were Alison Hunter, who won the $1,000 Ruth M. Patrick Endowed Scholarship in Food Science, Lyndsey White, who won the Kleinpeter Farms Dairy Undergraduate Scholarship, Brittany Dufrene, who won the Wright Enrichment, Inc. Undergraduate Scholarship, and Amy Jones, who won the Zapp’s Potato Chips Undergraduate Scholarship, all worth $2,000 each.  Congratulations to these outstanding students!  Special thanks go out to our sponsors who have generously donated these scholarships, offering added opportunities to Food Science students!

One of the traditions at the dinner is a Pie Baking Competition, which was open to everyone in the department. The winner was Lyndsey White, who made a Banana Cream pie.  Second place went to Darryl Holliday for his Cherry Mango and third place went to Dr. J. Samuel Godber for his Coconut Cream pie and Alison Hunter for her Pecan pie.

“There were countless dishes reflecting our diversity and culinary skills.  Overall, it was a great night of fun and food!” said Lauren Cook, President of the Food Science Club and organizer of the event.

Department Head Dr. John Finley said, “We’re celebrating the fact that we now have a culinary science program, and starting in the fall, we will have a pre-med option where students can obtain a B.S. in Food Science while meeting all requirements for a pre-med program.  Food Science is an excellent choice because if one does not go to medical school there is an abundance of excellent career opportunities.”
