Established in 2006-7, the Humanities and Social Sciences Communication Studio (“Studio 151”) is located in 151 Coates Hall. This facility, a joint project with the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Communication Across the Curriculum (CxC), the Department of Communication Studies, and Film & Media Arts, provides our students with media technology practice with which to complement their study of film and media theory and history. Studio 151 functions as a classroom for several FMA courses as well as a laboratory for students and faculty to work on research and class projects and to attend workshops pertaining to digital media software and hardware, or tutoring sessions with CxC mentors.

Studio 151 hosts an annual short video festival as well as special events and workshops; these are open to all members of the LSU community. In 2006, we inaugurated the studio with a documentary video project co-sponsored by the HopKins Black Box theatre and the Center for French and Francophone Studies, Revisiting Flaherty’s Louisiana Story, a collaboration among FMA faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and our guest artist, independent filmmaker Rob Rombout.

Resources include: Apple server and RAID array for hosting and data storage and retrieval; Apple Powerbooks and desktop computers equipped with non-linear DV editing (Final Cut Pro HD and iMovie) and other media software; an Apple G5 editing suite, Canon Mini DV Camcorders; Tungsten Lighting kits; a sound recording booth and digital audio recorders; high definition projection, surround sound system, and front and rear projection screen for multi-media playback. Studio 151 is installed as a Wi-Fi Hot Spot. FMA and Communication Studies also maintain a library of feature and documentary films on DVD in the studio.
