Hardship Exemptions

Hardship exemptions are available to undergraduate and graduate students who can demonstrate financial need verified through the FAFSA.  Detailed below are the criteria and application process for receiving these exemptions.

Undergraduate Students

The regulations to receive hardship exemptions for undergraduate students changed, beginning with the fall 2013 semester. These exemptions are available for eight consecutive semesters of enrollment.

Academic Excellence Fee Exemption

  1. Complete the FAFSA
  2. Submit all necessary documents requested by LSU Financial Aid to complete the FAFSA
  3. Meet all eligibility requirements and receive a Federal Pell Grant
  4. Enroll full time (12 credit hours)
  5. Be a Louisiana resident
  6. Must not receive the benefit of financial assistance through a state or institutional program in an amount equal or greater than the exemption

Operational Fee Exemption, Building Use Fee Exemption, and Tuition Increase Exemption

  1. Complete the FAFSA
  2. Submit all necessary documents requested by LSU Financial Aid to complete the FAFSA
  3. Meet all eligibility requirements and receive a Federal Pell Grant
  4. Have a zero Expected Family Contribution (EFC) as determined by the FAFSA
  5. Enroll full time (12 credit hours)
  6. Be a Louisiana resident
  7. Must not receive the benefit of financial assistance through a state or institutional program in an amount equal or greater than the exemption

Graduate Students

Please note: Graduate students who are receiving financial assistance through a scholarship, fellowship, assistantship, or federal/state grant aid are not eligible for a graduate hardship exemptions.  The total value of these exemptions will not exceed 5% of the Gross Revenues generated by the relevant tuition increase. Apply early as these funds are limited.

Graduate School Tuition Increase Exemption

  1. Enroll as a full time graduate/professional student from Louisiana
  2. Complete the FAFSA
  3. Submit all necessary documents requested by LSU Financial Aid to complete the FAFSA
  4. Have a zero Expected Family Contribution (EFC) as determined by the FAFSA

MBA Tuition Increase Exemption

  1. Enroll as a full time graduate/professional student from Louisiana
  2. Complete the FAFSA
  3. Submit all necessary documents requested by LSU Financial Aid to complete the FAFSA
  4. Have a zero Expected Family Contribution (EFC) as determined by the FAFSA

Veterinary Medicine Tuition Increase Exemption

  1. Enroll as a full time graduate/professional student from Louisiana
  2. Complete the FAFSA
  3. Submit all necessary documents requested by LSU Financial Aid to complete the FAFSA
  4. Have a zero Expected Family Contribution (EFC) as determined by the FAFSA
