Happy Holidays and Remembering the Semester

Dear Faculty, Staff and Students,

As the fall semester and 2012 draw to a close, it is a good time to look back over the past few months and reflect on the great progress we have made as a university. This fall, LSU brought in one of the largest and most diverse freshman classes in the university’s history; had several faculty members named as Fellows to prestigious academic organizations; and had a number of students and faculty win major national awards. We announced the highest-ever graduation rate for our undergraduate programs and we are working to establish a major initiative to promote LSU’s outstanding coastal research to the world.

This past Friday, the university graduated 1,672 students during its December commencement ceremonies, including 13 students who received University Medals for graduating with perfect GPAs. We rung in the holidays with the LSU Candlelight Celebration and Holiday on Campus, opened a new and beautiful Barnes & Noble Bookstore in November, and dedicated a remembrance garden at the International Cultural Center for two of our former students. Our student athletes also had notable success, including, among others, a winning football season with slated play in the Chick-fil-A bowl in Atlanta on Dec. 31, and great starts thus far for the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Indeed, our entire LSU community - students, faculty and staff - should be commended for the truly exceptional work you have accomplished over the past few months. Well done.

As we look ahead to 2013, I know this great institution will continue its progress and become an even greater institution. Certainly as we move forward there will be challenges along the way, but I remain confident that we will continue to meet these challenges as we have in the past and focus ourselves on our noble mission of serving our students, this state and indeed, all of society. As we continue our work into the new year and dialog on topics such as reorganization and budget, let us do so in keeping our focus on lifting our Flagship ever higher.

Let me close by thanking each of you for your unwavering dedication and commitment to LSU. Please accept my warmest wishes for a safe and joyous holiday season.

Sincerely,
Stuart Bell, Executive Vice Chancellor & Provost
