Format of quizzes

Each quiz will have a list of 10 names of people, places, philosophies or religions, or ideas related to Modern East Asian history. You are asked to choose 8 (out of the total 10, 12.5% each answer) and identify them in two or three sentences. One sentence is not enough.
Items in the quizzes might come form the readings and from class lectures

A proper identification will answer three basic questions:

When? Make sure to include dates, unless otherwise indicated.

Who or What? Make sure to state clearly who the person was (an emperor? a philosopher?) or what the event, place or other item to be identified was (a revolution? a political movement? a religion?)

Why? State clearly why the person or other item to be identified is important. What is the most significant thing that makes him/her or it famous/important in Chinese history?

Format of Midterm and Final

Two essays (50% each)
You will be able to choose two out of three questions/topics and write a two-page essay for each.

Tips for writing a good short essay:
- read the question carefully and understand what it is its goal. A question/topic often includes different components. Be careful to address all in your answer.
- try to stay focused on the topic/questions (do not provide details or examples that are not directly related to the topic).
- you should write an essay and not a "laundry list." This means that you should not list information in a disorganized way. Try, instead, to organize your thoughts and present them as if you were writing a paper.
